The Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory's Newest Addition:
The Shoemaker Open Sky Theater

Opening Dedication Ceremony 11/17/06
Observatory Director, Kris Koenig, speaks about how the vision for the world's first ever
Open Air Planetarium came to be. Hundreds of people showed up for the dedication, and luckily for us,
the weather was especially kind that day.

New hand-held remote screens are passed around which show what is being viewed in the telescope inside the Observatory building.
On the right: Here's the lady of the hour, Carolyn Shoemaker, walking with Kris over to the Planetarium for the ribbon cutting.

People crowd in to enjoy the reclining star-gazing seats . As it turns out, more than 50 people can be seated comfortably!
and there's also wheelchair access and parking...

One particularly happy camper uses her hand-held viewer. Toddlers can enjoy too~
